Fallon goes again, and other stuff

Not content with nicking our title of "biggest club in Cambridge", the Villagers seem intent on taking the "most shambolic team in Cambridge" crown too.

Steve Y'know's sacking, just two days after he returned to work, was such a ridiculous (and funny) event that I'm half expecting Tony Roach to tear off his face and reveal that he is actually George Rolls masquerading in a Roach suit. Rolls/Roach hasn't even bothered to come up with a new reason for firing Fallon, instead just copying and pasting the statement he made when Lingy left and changing a couple of the names:

"After resuming the role only yesterday it soon became very evident that underlying irreconcilable differences between Steve and myself and the Board would preclude the partnership ever working for the benefit of Histon FC so it was a unanimous decision of the Board of Directors to relieve him of his responsibilities with immediate effect," the Histon supremo said, as he removed the last trace of the Baldwin era from the the Glassworld Stadium.

One suspects the irreconcilable differences between the pair may be small, bald, and Uncle Fester-shaped, as Lewer has, er, stepped into the shoes of his ex-boss on several occasions in the past. It should also be noted that none of these forays into management have gone particularly well, so I wish the Villagers luck with that one, they'll probably need it.

Meanwhile, United secretary Wayne Purser is on his way, meaning there is a vacancy in the club's backroom to be filled ahead of the AGM. A job for former Histon secretary Mrs Baldwin perhaps? Certainly it's looking more and more likely that she and/or her husband will be involved with United at some point in the future.

Lol, Us rckd by txt gte

The big breaking story from the weekend was the revelation in the NLP that Alan Lewer could take legal action against United after being "offered" the United managers job.

It made a nice headline for the afforementioned publication, even if the story itself had more holes in it than a large lump of emmental. The most amusing part of the whole thing was the suggestion that Chairman George sent Lewer a text saying "sorry not u" by way of informing him he didn't have the job. Presumably Ling got one saying "Gt the jb, cngrts", or something similar. Still it could've been worse - George could've done a Phil Hughes/Darren Bent and announced his decision to the world at large using Twitter. Perhaps that's something to bare in mind next time we need a new boss.

Moving onto matters at hand, and United complete their pre-season schedule tonight when they host The Villagers in the Cambs Professional Cup final, a fixture second only to the Champions League final in terms of its importance in the domestic football calendar. Or at least that's the impression you'd get if you listened to Steve Y'Know.

"It's all right having pre-season friendlies, but you need the more competitive games to work on one or two things," Y'Know told the CEN, before bizarrely adding: "Hopefully, tonight will give us the chance to fine tune and get more geared up, especially in terms of the refereeing. You can get away with one or two things in friendlies and we know we won't get away with them tonight and have to treat it properly."

Competitive game? Must be why Ling is fielding a second string line up. I'm glad to see they're taking it so seriously though, perhaps this is all part of the plan to grow the Histon brand on a global scale. Expect a four-page pull out in the paper if they win tonight.

Welcome back Bimmo, see ya later Reedy

The bald scousers club at United enrolled another member yesterday with the return of Stuart Bimson as first team coach.

I was never a big fan of Bimmo as a player. He wasn’t really good enough to start with, then when he returned to the team he benefited from what I like to call Andy Duncan syndrome, whereby the paucity of the players around you makes you appear to be better than you actually are.

Anyway, he always seemed like a decent enough fellow, and has all his coaching badges, so will hopefully be a good addition to the team. He certainly didn’t do Hoyte or Farrell, his two former Bedford protégés, any harm, and anything which allows Carden to spend more time focussed on playing is a good thing in my book.

Speaking of crap left back’s, I wasn’t displeased to see Alan Lewer make an entirely predictable swoop for his secret lovechild, Stephen Reed. While Reedy made a few good contributions last season, he is a limited and easily replaceable player, who by all accounts thinks he’s better than he is. I doubt he’ll be missed unduly.

Meanwhile, just like the Cristiano Ronaldo saga, only with less preening and crass slavery references, the proposed transfer of Chester striker Chris Holroyd continues to drag on and on and on. “It's not dead in the water and I think we've got a good relationship with Chester,” the Brabinator told yesterday’s CEN, despite the fact that the strikers agent is continuing to avoid him like Peaches Geldof dodges rehab.

So far Holroyd has flirted with Stockport County and Bournemouth, while showing no public desire to come to United. One suspects he is keeping us hanging on as a last resort, and if that is the case I think it’s time to look elsewhere, starting tonight with Bury trialist Domaine Rouse. I reckon that with a smile like that the 19-year old could go a long way.
